Day 2: Cusco and Sacred Valley. Upon your arrival, one of our representatives will be waiting for you right outside of the baggage claim area holding a sign with your name on it. You will then be transferred to your hotel in the sacred valley; you will make a stop at Awanacancha, where you will see the four Andean camels (llamas, alpacas, huanacos and vicuñas) and then see a traditional Andean textile center that serves as a perfect introduction to the Andean life.

You will visit the colorful and famous market of Pisac, which has a large number of local artisans who gather from different communities to sell their handicrafts and unique food. You can then go to Pisac’s impressive archeological complex, which has a simply breathtaking view. Then you will be transferred to your hotel for a light lunch and rest in order to acclimate better to the altitude.

Day 3: Sacred Valley. We leave The Sacred Valley and head to the Chinchero Plateau to explore Chinchero, an important town in Inca times. The most striking remnant of this period is the massive stone wall in the main plaza, which has 10 trapezoidal niches, and the colonial church. Next, we’ll proceed to the enigmatic Inca ruins at Moray. Visually, these stepped-terrace ruins resemble an ancient amphitheater, though some experts believe they served as agricultural laboratories where the Incas could experiment with new farming techniques. Enjoy a delightful picnic lunch, where you can savor dishes made with locally grown produce. Visit the salt mines of Maras. This village is a salt-producing center that dates back all the way to pre-Inca times. There are more than 4,000 salt pools carved into the mountain. (B,L)

Day 4: Huchuy Qosqo. We leave The Sacred Valley in a private transport that takes us to Chinchero to then follow on to Tauca, a small Andean community that is the starting point of our trek. We start hiking uphill amid beautiful mountain scenery with llamas, alpacas and lovely views of the Piuray Lagoon until we reach the only mountain pass of this program at 4500m/14760ft (2h). We then start descending along a restored Inca Trail for approximately one hour towards the small Andean community of Pumamarca (4,010m/13,153ft). From there, we walk downhill towards the Leon Punku ravine, where we find the remains of an Inca bridge and trail. This canyon boasts geological formations surrounded by majestic rocks and boulders that direct the river to Huchuy Qosqo at 3,600m/11,808ft, where we arrive by early afternoon.

Huchuy Qosqo is an Inca archaeological complex with imposing architecture that includes a large open ceremonial center, from which we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Sacred Valley, the Vilcanota River, and the snow-capped mountain range of the same name. While in the complex, we receive a guided tour, after which we continue our way to Lamay at 3000m/9840ft. Lamay is a town dedicated to agriculture and cattle raising. Later in the afternoon, our private transport drives us back to Cusco. Estimated arrival time is late evening. (B,L).

Day 5: Short Inca Trail and Arrive at Mapi. A 7 a.m. train departure from Ollantaytambo gets you to station Km #104. After registering at the checkpoint, you’ll begin the three-hour hike to Wiñay Wayna, during which you’ll see ruins, waterfalls and many varieties of flora and fauna. You’ll take lots of photos on this picturesque stretch of your Peru tour. Spend one to two hours exploring the beautiful Wiñay Wayna ruins. From here it is a two-hour walk to Machu Picchu. You will arrive at the famous ruins in the late afternoon when there are few visitors. After a brief tour, transfer by bus to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll spend the night at a charming hotel. The evening is free to explore this small village and soak in the hot springs. (B,L)

Day 6: Guided tour of Machu Picchu; free time to explore or hike Huayna Picchu. We have an early breakfast and head up to the ruins to experience the peace and solitude of this magical place. Our knowledgeable guide leads us through, explaining the significance of the various structures and the theories behind Machu Picchu’s purpose and construction methods. We have the rest of the morning and early afternoon to attempt the optional hike up Huayna Picchu and/or explore the ruins on our own. We catch the afternoon tourist train to Ollantaytambo and from there take the bus to Cusco, arriving at approximately 7 p.m. The day concludes with our guide joining us for a final celebration dinner at a traditional local restaurant. Overnight in Cusco. (B).

Hiking: Optional Huayna Picchu hike may be unguided and is steep with some exposure. Permits are limited. An alternative optional hike may be available if Huayna Picchu permits cannot be obtained.

Day 7: Tour of Cusco City and Nearby Ruins.Today we have a guided tour of Cusco and its nearby ruins. You’ll tour prominent Inca sites in and around Cusco, including temples, the megalithic Sacsayhuaman fortress, the carved stone surfaces and subterranean altars of Kenko, the small Puka Pukara fortress that protected the capital, and the Tambomachay water temple. After a local lunch, we explore the city by foot to appreciate its superbly constructed Inca walls and architecturally extravagant colonial churches and palaces. This also includes a visit of Koricancha, the Golden Temple of the Sun in ancient times, and the cathedral. Then you may have time to explore some of the central parts of the city and a chance to look at some of the great varieties of local craft work on sale in open-air artisan markets and shops. (B)

Day 8: Vinicunca Mountain Range and the Red Valley. Early in the morning you will be taken from Cusco to take a private transfer through the fertile Vilcanota Valley, en route to the village of Cusipata. You will then pass through the community of Quisa Cancha, where you can expect to see locals shepherding both llamas and alpacas. After the three hour ride you will arrive at an area called Collpapampa, which will be the starting point for your hike. Here, you will begin to ascend with a beautiful view of the mountain Nevado del Inca. As you hike, or while you stop for lunch on the trek, you may see hundreds of Andean geese nesting in the cliffs and the flat-iron formations of the mountain, Apu Labrayani. At the end of your three-hour trek, you will arrive at the camp site where the red valley is located, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 9. Vinicunca Mountain Range, Red Valley and Cusco. Early in the morning, enjoy breakfast at the campsite before setting out for the second day of your trek. You will ascend for about two hours, walking through intriguing formations of red sandstone. This part of the hike offers excellent opportunities to study geological wonders and admire the unique beauty of the landscape. Upon arrival at Vinicunca, you will marvel at the multicolored strata that paint the mountains red, yellow, ocher, gray, and blue. After enjoying the impressive landscape, you will descend for about three hours through the valley that leads to Japura, where you will enjoy lunch before taking your private transfer back to Cusco

Day 10: Transfer to Airport in Cusco. After breakfast, transfers back to the Cusco airport will be arranged for travelers departing today. Trip members can opt to return to Lima for connecting flights home or extend their travels in Peru.  (B)
